Modified Cars
A trend that has taken off in modern times in the modification of cars.
This means that the car is taken from its usual state and parts or components are added to enhance the properties of the car. This could mean that parts are added to the exterior of the car for 'improved' or individual styling, through to engine components being added to increase the performance (or brake horsepower) of the car. As a general rule 'modification' is a trend that is resigned to the more modern car and tends to be particularly popular for smaller or 'hatchback' models of car.
Some common forms of modification to cars are to replace the original wheels with alloy wheels. These usually feature a much larger diameter than the original for the purpose of aesthetics. Making the suspension of the car lower is another popular choice among modification enthusiasts, who like to give their cars a quick make over or a different look. This involves changing the springs as well as sometimes the shock absorbers and usually the exhaust system. The result is a car with greater exhaust flow, producing a much louder and possibly deeper sound with some possible improvements to the performance of the car.
Those who like to take the modification of their cars a little further may introduce a 'body kit' made of fiberglass. The paint colour is often changed to be a little more unique and metallic shades are a popular choice. Air filters may be added to the car or even a 'turbo charger' kit to give greater performance.
The interior of the car is often modified also. The most common choice is audio modification, changing the standard tape or CD player of a car for a more expensive model. Seats may also be changed to the popular 'bucket' style and the upholstery of the seats will often be changed as well.
There are many other modifications that are done to both the exterior and interior of a car and this names just a few. Any modifications to your car can be a disadvantage when coming to insuring it. A recommended site to use for insuring modified cars is directline.com.
Drivers of these types of car are often referred to as 'boy racers'. This is a modern day colloquiel phase that usually describes a male in late teens or early twenties who drives in a dangerous or intimidating way. Their cars are usually modified and are often fairly cheap models in a manufacturers range and nothing compared to the performance of a higher end, more expensive car. Modern films such as 'Fast and Furious' have raised the profile of the boy racer, and possibly added to the popularity of car modification.
