The history of cars dates back to the nineteenth century and has developed hugely since the first motor vehicle took to the roads. We are now in a era where the vast majority of people will own a car and a lot of people count motor sports as a hobby or pastime. This may be collecting and restoring old 'classic' cars or could even be the fairly modern trend of car modification.
In this age where we now looking for greener ways to live, it is natural that this has spilled over into ways to improve the environmental impact travel is having upon the earth. For this reason, electricity has been talked of as a possible alternative to diesel and petrol to power our cars. The first application of a battery-powered electric motor to a vehicle was made in 1881 by the Frenchman, Charles Jean-Raud. Electric vehicles were found to be quiet, smooth-running and easily controlled. They also had surprisingly good acceleration. But batteries were heavy and restricted the speed the car was able to travel at.
A later revival in interest in electric power for cars came about in the 1970's after a rise in petrol prices. This saw the production of the Enfield, the first electric car in Britain for approximately half a century.
